The Older Iowans Legislature (OIL) was formed in 1978 to keep Iowan's seniors informed about legislation and how to process their legislative needs. Organization of the group was instigated by the Department of Elder Affairs (now the Dept. on Aging) and the Area Agencies on Aging (AAA's). The Older Iowans Legislature was officially authorized by the State Legislature. Until 2004, the Older Iowans Legislature was financially supported by the Department of Elder Affairs. Due to financial constraints, these ties were severed. Believing in the mission of a dedicated group of seniors, many of the members continued their work, forming an independent organization of the Older Iowans Legislature which is supported by member dues. The Older Iowans Legislature is the ONLY independent voice sponsoring bills for seniors before the state legislature. Annually in September a Legislative Session is held at the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines in the House Chambers. At that time, senior delegates from throughout the state submit bills and share in the debate to select five priority bills. The top five priority bills are submitted to the Iowa General Assembly, the Governor and the public. Older Iowans Legislature members advocate for passage during the formal state legislative session.
